'Tis The Season, to Celebrate Treason
Today we celebrate our Independence, Insurrection, Treason, Rebellion, and Revolution.
Light the grill, prepare the fireworks, crack a cold beer with your in-laws and friends, and remember to pay your sales taxes, get your permits, and don’t forget to ask the state for permission to celebrate its very existence.
Happy 4th of July!
This year more than ever, it seems we’ve forgotten what it is we’re celebrating. “Freedom isn’t Free” is something no American isn’t used to hearing as a constant justification for war, militarization, and subservience to government overreach, but the actual cost of the freedom we pretend to enjoy is often lost and forgotten about.
The true cost of Freedom for The United States was Insurrection, Rebellion, Treason, and war. It took men willing to put their lives on the line, to make war against an oppressive state, and take their freedom by the force of arms. Yet today, the media and politicians in the halls of congress use the word “Insurrection” as a descriptor for what they deem to be unacceptable and terrifying.
There was a time in our Nation’s history when the notion of rebellion was not simply feared by our leaders but honored as a reminder that they relied on the consent of the governed to maintain their government. In his letter to William Stephens Smith regarding his opinions on the New Constitution, Thomas Jefferson opined at length about his opposition to a Supreme Court and his dislike of general elections, but most importantly he said:
We have had 13. states independent 11. years. There has been one rebellion. That comes to one rebellion in a century and a half for each state. What country before ever existed a century and a half without a rebellion? And what country can preserve its liberties if its rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signifies a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants. It is its natural manure. Our Convention has been too much impressed by the insurrection of Massachusets: and in the spur of the moment they are setting up a kite to keep the hen yard in order. I hope in god this article will be rectified before the new constitution is accepted.
In my bio on Twitter, I describe my politics as being an Anarcho-Nihilist. This is as much a tongue-in-cheek joke about my black-pilled pessimism regarding political struggle in the modern world, as it is an honest attempt to describe the intersection of my political and moral philosophies.
Yet, while most Americans are busy being pacified with Barbecue and Fireworks in the name of freedoms they don’t know they’ve lost, Members of congress occupy themselves with investigating a faux-insurrection and seek to make political examples of those who they can punish with impunity. Meanwhile, I think back to the Morning of January 6th, 2020, and remember the first time in my politically active life that I had a glimmer of true hope for the American People.
As I turned on the news to watch the coverage of the Riot in the capital I was struck with two impressions. Firstly, the protestors who devolved into an enraged riot that stormed the barricades and entered the halls of congress were idiots - LARPers, Cosplayers, a handful of boomers, and just a large group of angry people, some in absurd costumes, who had let their anger get the best of them, and let their protest devolve into a chaotic riot. Secondly, regardless of the fact that these rioters clearly had no plan, no organization, no objective, and no sense of their action, members of congress were afraid.
For the first time in my life, those who aspire to rule us, and sit loftily in their halls of power and issue edicts that affect the lives of the lowly peasant class, admitted that they lived in fear of us. And that was the greatest white pill of optimism I could have ever swallowed. While most Americans clearly haven’t understood the gravity of that revelation, the reality was made known that true power lies not within the halls of congress, but within the hearts of the men and women who dare stand up against those in power.
“And what country can preserve it’s liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms.”
-Thomas Jefferson
That power lies in you, and in me, and in those we call our brothers and sisters in the struggle for liberty in the modern world. As members of congress cowered in fear and crawled to safety on their hands and knees, we should have celebrated our newly reclaimed power over them. Because for the first time in generations, they could no longer lie and hide about that fear possessing them and driving their actions. They must be reminded that they rely on the consent of the governed and that our consent is at an end.
This 4th of July, as you light up your grill, crack your cold beers, and ignite your permitted fireworks, remember that true freedom relies not on the whims of politicians, but on the will of those like you to fight for it.
