The 5 Traits of Salespeople
All the training, and practice in the world won’t make you a great salesperson without adopting a few specific character traits that can change your approach to everything you do in life. We’ve all met someone who just has a natural talent for sales. The smooth-talking friend from college who could sell ice to an Eskimo. Yet, simply having the great conversation skills that we’ve previously discussed, or knowing how to control your interactions and their outcomes, isn’t nearly enough to launch someone to succeed in the realm of sales. So again, whether we are selling cars, insurance, or a political ideology, it’s important to be open to self-development and growth in order better ourselves and better our outcomes.
There is no end to the personality traits we could discuss, we’re going to focus only on a few of them. The traits we’re going to focus on are those that are easy to change and have the widest range of applications in our everyday lives as well. We will focus not only on improving our ability to sell but improving our ability to grow in the future as well, by simply focusing on five simple traits that we can start adopting today.
As we go through these traits, remember that this isn’t going to be as simple to incorporate as the changes to the way we communicate as discussed earlier. These traits are things that often come naturally to some, and are much more difficult for others. It’s not necessary to focus on all of them at once, but the best salespeople among us have mastered all five of them. As we go through this chapter, we are going to focus on these traits one at a time, and build upon them as we go, as opposed to implementing the changes as a whole. But by making the changes in ourselves, and being open to growth, these traits will make us better salespeople, better candidates, and better activists.
