The third Monday of every April marks a special occasion, a holiday commemorating the early engagements of the American Revolution in Concord and Lexington Massachusetts. While many young folks are ignorant of the history and impetus of the revolution, and the sentiments of personal liberty and sovereignty the founders of this nation fought for, this holiday has come to be embraced and celebrated widely in the State of Massachusetts for other reasons.
Marathon Monday, where millions gather to watch thousands make the trek from Hopkinton to Boston. 26.2 miles, across one of the most difficult marathon courses in the world. Notable mostly because of the hills, which have been known to break even veteran marathon runners, but still a draw, and an event and occasion that millions look forward to each year.
In 2013, things took a turn sour for the spectators of the largest annual sporting event in New England, as terrorists detonated bombs near the finish line, Killing 3 and wounding 281 others. The unexpected turn of events changed not only the temper of my evening but set in course a series of events that changed the trajectory of my life.
I won’t chase a word-count target recounting the story of that day, and my experiences in the City of Boston that Night. But it is a story I have shared before, and I encourage you to read it if you haven’t before. It’s not just the story of how I participated in a government operation that can best be described as an overreaction in the practice of security there, but also what led me to question my own morals and values, and what led me to realize my place as a Libertarian.
