Perhaps it’s time we realize that there’s a problem in party politics that doesn’t exempt the Libertarian party from its reach. Perhaps the warnings of Washington are finally ringing true today, as they were spoken nearly 250 years ago. Tribalism, Partisanship, and a general disregard for human decency have infested politics writ large in the United States, and the Libertarian Party has not escaped unscathed.
Even within the relatively small liberty movement, and more exactly, the Libertarian Party, tribalism and blind partisanship have taken root to disastrous effect. We’re too small and too dispersed to wield the power of the majority to protect the rights of individuals through the political process, and the constant infighting and struggle sessions over social media posts and leadership positions in a largely powerless institution have only made a mockery of what Libertarians propose to do.
How can we be fit to govern others, when we can’t even clean our own house, and govern private institutions without corruption, graft, nepotism, and arrogance. When the chair of the Libertarian Party resigns in disgrace, after trying to manipulate backroom politics and shady corrupt deals, and deletes his email records to try and cover it up, how can we claim that our government would be better than that of Clinton, or Trump, or any others who we ostensibly oppose?
Perhaps it’s time for the Liberty Movement, to give up on the idea of party politics. Perhaps the Libertarian Party no longer has the potential for viability in the political climate. Perhaps the true path to liberty lies in practice, rather than in theory. In counter-economics and agorism. In blockchain technology. In community. In people. In you and me, together, working to make a world free in our lifetimes, not through politics, but in spite of it.
Yours in Liberty,
Justin O’Donnell
