Nikki Haley Discriminates Against Independent Media
I was disallowed entry to record Nikki Haley's Town Hall in Manchester
One of the things that makes New Hampshire special, is the ready access that everyday people have to presidential candidates during the primaries. Town Halls, meet and greats, and the ever famous diner tours have given the average granite stater direct access to presidential hopefuls early in the race every cycle. And for as long as I’ve lived in New Hampshire, I’ve gone out of my way to meet and engage with as many of them as possible, sometimes to heckle, sometimes out of genuine curiosity, and more recently, with direct journalistic intent.
Most of these town halls are intimate events, and while there are plenty of news crews in attendance, only soundbites and short clips will ever see the airwaves and be shared with the voters who will be asked to cast their votes in the first in the nation primary. I’m not a huge fan of the corporate mainstream media, and I think my reluctance to trust their representation of our politicians is shared by a growing majority of Americans. I resolved to approach this primary season in a new manner, I aim to attend town halls for as many different candidates as possible, and record them fully. And while I will editorialize and share my opinions with my readers, I will publish the video of the entire event, unedited, in full, for the review of all.
I have attended events for numerous candidates over the years with my camera equipment in tow, including Don Bolduc, Tulsi Gabbard, Donald Trump, Jeb Bush, Pete Buttigieg, Jo Jorgensen, and others - and never been denied entry. For the first time in my time as a New Hampshire voter and political activist, that changed tonight.
I took the night off from my regularly scheduled work to attend Nikki Haley’s campaign Town Hall in Manchester, with the intent of recording and sharing with all of you, and was instead stopped at the door, in light of my reservation and ticket, and disallowed entry because of my cameras and identification as an independent journalist.
I was told in no uncertain terms, that the only media allowed in with professional equipment, would be those on the approved list managed by the campaign. And while I don’t have video of the Town Hall to share, nor my impressions or commentary on the former Governor and UN Ambassador’s pitch for the presidency, I do have this short Twitter-length clip to share of her media liaison trying her best to tell me it was my fault for not being official enough. (She even took pictures of my registered credentials!)
