Is Criminal Justice Reform the issue that will finally break the left?
With democrat voters nearly universally supporting ending the war on drugs and sentencing reform, will the fact that establishment politicians continue to ignore them have mid-term consequences?
Criminal Justice reform, it’s often a rallying cry for unity between Libertarians and Progressives. One of the few issues where the left aligns with our mission for a more free world that embraces liberty in our lifetimes, and a chance to work across aisles to turn our proposals into policy. Or so you would think.
With a record number of Americans supporting moves to end the failed war on drugs, and embracing broad criminal justice reform that would see non-violent and victimless crimes stricken from the law books in favor of restitution based justice that focuses on punishing crimes in which a victim was harmed, You would think that these popular ideas would start taking hold in our legislative assemblies across the country.
But time and time again it’s taken Citizen referendums to end the prohibition of cannabis at the state level, while politicians fight to keep unpopular bans strictly in place. Because the perverse incentive of the war on drugs to fuel the prison industrial complex benefits the investor class, and those elected to the offices that write the very laws that fill their bunks.
Last night I sat down to interview Daniel Muessig, a cannabis entrepreneur, organized crime boss, rapper, and lawyer from western Pennsylvania. We talked about his time growing up in the inner city as a product of street gangs, getting out and going to law school, becoming disillusioned with the legal profession, and throwing it all away to become one of the largest black market cannabis bosses on the eastern seaboard. And how now he’s facing a 60-month mandatory minimum sentence, for a non-violent, victimless crime to which he pled guilty.
He’s counting the days till he reports to start his prison sentence, and making use of every last minute in campaigning for sentencing reform and criminal justice reform with https://www.pardonsnow.com
