Barefoot Learning
Science has failed to overcome millions of years of evolution when it comes to footwear, so why should we think Education is any different?
A Bare Minimum Review
I’m going to break the mold here, not give you a lengthy 3,000-word article, and take a note out of the stylings of the book I want to talk to you about. Ian Underwood’s third book, “Barefoot Learning: What Shoes Can Teach Us About Schools” is a quick and simple read. At a brief 120 pages, it is unintimidating from the moment you pick it up. But more, when you crack open any of Ian’s works from Bare Minimum Books, you’re met with a simple premise, of only a single idea per page. Sometimes that means a short paragraph, and others it means only a few words of a single sentence.
Without losing the reader to in-depth nuance, and lengthy argumentation, Underwood makes his points as simplistically and practically as possible. In the case of “Barefoot Learning,” he outlines a thorough history of how the engineering behind footwear has failed to accomplish what evolution naturally did, gives us working feet, and relates that to how we approach other aspects of life, primarily education and specialization. This volume is a worthy addition to your coffee table collection, or maybe even your gift-giving lists for the holiday season! Pick it up, and then Pass it on!
